3.1 What is Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS)?
RTGS is a gross settlement system in which both processing and final settlement of funds transfer instructions take place continuously (i.e., in real time) . In an RTGS system, transactions are settled individually, continuously, and in real-time in the accounts of participants at the central bank, provided the sending participant has a sufficient balance or credit . The key features of RTGS are:

RTGS systems are classified as Systemically Important Payment Systems (SIPS) due to the high value of transactions they process and their impact on the economy . They mitigate the systemic settlement risk inherent in large-value net settlements by ensuring final settlement in real-time . They also play a crucial role in the transmission of monetary policy .
