Despite broad global progress in financial inclusion, a persistent Gender Gap continues to limit women’s access to formal financial services across many emerging economies, according to Global Findex indicators.
Primary Drivers of the Gender Access Gap
- Discriminatory Property Rights: Laws or cultural practices that restrict women from owning land or property, leaving them unable to provide the traditional collateral required for commercial bank loans.
- Documentation Constraints: Women are statistically less likely to hold formal identification records, mobile phone SIM cards registered in their own names, or independent tax profiles.
- Geographic Disconnections: Rural women often face travel restrictions or lack the time to visit distant physical bank branches, leaving them reliant on informal cash transactions.
