This lesson integrates sustainability into the strategic management accounting framework. It explores the concepts of the triple bottom line, environmental and social accounting, and how sustainability is embedded into strategy, costing, performance measurement, and reporting .

  • Managing for Sustainability: The CASL syllabus dedicates 10% to “Sustainability and Strategic Management Accounting” . This includes evaluating developments in management accounting towards sustainability, such as sustainable business, the triple bottom line, Environmental Management Accounting (EMA), Social Accounting (SA), and accounting for ecological and carbon footprints . The CMA syllabus also recognises sustainability, covering “Sustainability and social responsibility” under Professional Ethics .

  • Sustainability Management Accounting: The syllabus distinguishes Sustainability Accounting (which may be external) from Sustainability Management Accounting (which is internal and decision-focused) . The CASL syllabus asks students to “Distinguish between linear, circular and bioeconomy” and to “Evaluate the use of management accounting tools for circular economy business models” .

  • Sustainability and Management Accounting Tools: Research highlights the integration of ESG metrics into Strategic Management Accounting, including tools such as sustainability cost accounting, carbon budgeting, risk-based performance systems, and internal ESG dashboards . The CASL syllabus specifically requires students to “Assess the impact of climate change and global warming, including the identification and evaluation of climate-related risks” and “Evaluate climate mitigation strategies and adaptation measures, emphasising the role of management accounting in supporting these measures” .

  • Sustainability Performance Management: The CASL syllabus asks students to “Develop corporate sustainability strategy integration by focusing on reactive, preventive and proactive strategies” and to “Evaluate different ways of integrating sustainability into performance measurement and control systems using the Sustainability Balanced Scorecard (SBSC)” .

  • Sustainability Reporting Frameworks: The syllabus covers the role of management accounting in supporting “contemporary developments in sustainability reporting practices, including Global Reporting Initiative [GRI] Guidelines and IFRS Sustainability Standards” . The CASL syllabus also covers the GRI, ISO 14000 and 26000 standards, and AA1000 .
