2. Environmental Management Accounting (EMA)
EMA tracks both financial data and physical metrics (such as material weights, energy consumption, and waste volumes) to ensure the true costs of waste disposal and resource consumption are assigned accurately:
- Material Flow Cost Accounting (MFCA): Traces the flow of raw materials through production steps. The physical mass of material that ends up as waste or emissions is assigned its full share of material and energy costs, making the true financial impact of waste visible to management.
- Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): Incorporates the projected future costs of recycling, product take-back programs, or safe disposal directly into current product cost estimates.
3. Carbon Costing and Global Tariffs
Multi-national companies must factor international carbon pricing and environmental regulations into their product cost structures:
- Internal Carbon Pricing (ICP): Many companies apply a shadow price to carbon emissions during capital budgeting. This treats greenhouse gas emissions as an active expense, helping ensure long-term investments remain viable under changing environmental regulations.
- Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms (CBAM): Regulations like Europe’s CBAM impose tariffs on carbon-intensive imports. Cost accountants must track and include these carbon tariff compliance costs when calculating the total cost of ownership for global supply chains.
