5.1 The Card Payment Ecosystem

Card payments are processed through a complex ecosystem involving multiple parties :

Key Participants

  • Cardholder: The consumer making the purchase

  • Merchant: The business accepting payment

  • Issuer Bank: The bank that issues the card to the cardholder

  • Acquirer Bank: The bank that processes payments for the merchant

  • Card Network/Brand: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover—operates the payment infrastructure

The Authorization Process

  1. Customer presents card at merchant

  2. Merchant captures payment information

  3. Merchant sends authorization request to acquirer

  4. Acquirer forwards request to card network

  5. Card network routes request to issuer bank

  6. Issuer validates and authorizes or declines

  7. Authorization response is sent back

  8. Transaction is completed

5.2 Credit Card vs. Debit Card Processing

Credit Cards

  • Cardholder uses credit extended by issuer bank

  • Funds are provided by issuer bank, not deducted from cardholder account

  • Cardholder pays issuer later (or carries balance)

  • Higher interchange fees than debit

Debit Cards

  • Funds are deducted immediately from cardholder’s bank account

  • Requires sufficient balance in account

  • Lower processing costs than credit cards

  • Often processed through PIN networks (e.g., Visa Debit, MasterCard Debit)

5.3 Card Settlement and Clearing

Settlement Process

  1. Merchant submits batch of transactions to acquirer

  2. Acquirer forwards to card network

  3. Card network calculates net obligations

  4. Issuer sends funds to network

  5. Network forwards funds to acquirer

  6. Acquirer credits merchant account (typically within 1-2 days)

Risk Management in Card Systems

  • Fraud Prevention: Authentication (chip/PIN, CVV, 3D Secure)

  • Chargebacks: Dispute resolution mechanism

  • Interchange Fees: Fees paid by acquirer to issuer

  • Security Standards: PCI DSS compliance

5.4 Emerging Card Technologies

  • Contactless Cards: Tap-and-go payments (NFC technology)

  • Tokenization: Replacing card numbers with unique tokens

  • Virtual Cards: Digital-only card numbers

  • Wearable Payments: Watches, rings, and other devices
