2. Formula Architecture
- Direct Material Price Variance (MPV): Measures the financial impact of paying more or less for materials than the standard price benchmark allows. Responsibility: Procurement Manager.
MPV = (Actual Price − Standard Price) × Actual Quantity Purchased - Direct Material Usage Variance (MUV): Measures the physical efficiency of production by comparing the actual quantity used against the standard quantity allowed for the output achieved. Responsibility: Production Supervisor.
MUV = (Actual Quantity Used − Standard Quantity Allowed) × Standard Price - Total Material Variance: MPV + MUV
3. Interconnected Variances
Cost analysts must avoid evaluating variances in isolation. For example, a procurement manager might buy cheap, sub-standard raw materials, generating a highly Favorable Material Price Variance. However, this lower-quality material can cause excessive breaking and tearing on the factory floor, leading to a large Unfavorable Material Usage Variance and net overall losses for the firm.
