For evidence to successfully support regulatory disclosures, withstand civil challenges, or prove liability in a court of law, investigators must maintain an airtight legal chain of custody:
- Cryptographic Hashing: Instantly computing unique SHA-256 or MD5 hash signatures for all extracted digital files, emails, SWIFT logs, and registry entries. Any subsequent modification to the data will instantly break the hash value, ensuring total data integrity.
- Immutable Custody Logging: Maintaining a chronological log detailing exactly who gathered the evidence, when it was accessed, where it was securely archived, and what technical tools were used during retrieval.
- Write-Blocking Hardware: Utilizing hardware write-blockers during physical drive captures to prevent the investigative operating system from accidentally altering metadata timestamps on the original media source.
