The Certificate in Islamic Banking & Finance is a professionally oriented programme designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, products, contracts, operations, governance and risk-management practices of Islamic financial institutions.
The programme combines the foundations of Shariβah-compliant finance with contemporary banking, financial markets, accounting, governance and risk-management practices.
Participants will learn how Islamic financial institutions operate and how major Islamic finance contracts are structured, including:
- Murabahah β cost-plus financing
- Mudarabah β profit-sharing
- Musharakah β partnership financing
- Ijarah β leasing
- Salam β advance purchase
- Istisna’a β manufacturing/construction financing
- Wakalah β agency
- Qard β benevolent loan
- Takaful β Islamic insurance
- Sukuk β Shariβah-compliant capital-market instruments
- Waqf and Zakah within relevant financial contexts
The programme is particularly designed for applicants from Gulf/MENA, Malaysia and Indonesia, Pakistan and Bangladesh, Africa and other emerging Islamic-finance markets, while remaining relevant to institutions operating Islamic banking windows in predominantly conventional financial systems.
The curriculum is benchmarked against AAOIFI Shari’ah, accounting, auditing and governance standards; IFSB prudential and supervisory standards; Basel banking principles; and relevant international financial reporting and regulatory concepts. AAOIFI’s standards cover Islamic financial contracts, banking, capital markets, financing and other areas, while its accounting, auditing and governance standards provide guidance for Islamic financial institutions.
IFSB standards adapt or supplement conventional international banking standards, principally Basel standards, to address the specific characteristics and risks of Islamic financial institutions.
